The Indian Premier League (IPL) is a premier T20 cricket tournament hosted in India. Since its inception in 2008 the league has completed 18 successful years evolving into the wealthiest cricket tournament globally. It is a stage where a players talent and a bit of luck can command a price tag as high as 20 Crore. While the league started with 8 original franchises it has now expanded to 10 teams.

The Early Years (2008–2012)

2008: Rajasthan Royals (RR)
In the inaugural final RR faced Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Chasing a target of 164 RR secured a 3-wicket victory on the final ball. Yusuf Pathan was named Man of the Match for his all-round performance.

2009: Deccan Chargers (DC)
Played in South Africa DC defended a modest total of 143 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) winning by 6 runs. Despite being on the losing side RCB captain Anil Kumble was awarded Man of the Match for his incredible bowling.

2010: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK won their first title by defeating Mumbai Indians (MI) by 22 runs. Defending 168 CSK restricted MI to 146. Suresh Raina earned Man of the Match for his quick-fire 57 off 35 balls.

2011: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK became the first team to retain the title defeating RCB by 52 runs. Murali Vijay was the hero scoring a massive 95 runs off 52 balls.

2012: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
KKR chased down a daunting target of 191 against CSK with 2 balls to spare. Manvinder Bisla won Man of the Match for his brilliant 89 off 48 balls.


The Era of Dominance (2013–2017)

2013: Mumbai Indians (MI)
MI secured their maiden trophy by beating CSK. Defending 148 MIs bowlers restricted CSK to 125. Kieron Pollard was the standout performer with an unbeaten 60.

2014: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
In a high-scoring thriller KKR chased down Kings XI Punjabs 199. Manish Pandey played a match-winning knock of 94 runs to secure KKR's second title.

2015: Mumbai Indians (MI)
MI faced CSK again and posted a massive 202. CSK could only manage 161 in response. Captain Rohit Sharma was named Man of the Match for his 50 off 26 balls.

2016: Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH)
SRH defeated RCB in a high-octane final. Setting a target of 209 SRH won by just 8 runs. Ben Cutting was Man of the Match for his 39 runs and 2 crucial wickets.

2017: Mumbai Indians (MI)
In one of the closest finals MI defended a low score of 129 against Rising Pune Supergiant winning by a single run. Krunal Pandya was recognized for his fighting 47-run knock.


Modern Classics (2018–2022)

2018: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
Returning from a two-year ban CSK chased down 179 against SRH with ease. Shane Watson smashed a legendary 117 to seal the win. Sunil Narine was named Player of the Tournament.

2019: Mumbai Indians (MI)
MI defeated CSK by just 1 run in a heart-stopping finish. Jasprit Bumrah was Man of the Match for his clinical bowling (2/14) while Lasith Malinga defended 2 runs on the final ball to secure MI's 4th title.

2020: Mumbai Indians (MI)
During the pandemic season MI dominated Delhi Capitals chasing 157 with 8 balls to spare. Trent Boult took 3 wickets to win Man of the Match. Jofra Archer (RR) was the Player of the Tournament.

2021: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
CSK posted 192 and defeated KKR by 27 runs. Faf du Plessis (86 runs) was the Man of the Match. This season saw Ruturaj Gaikwad win the Orange Cap and Harshal Patel win the Purple Cap.

2022: Gujarat Titans (GT)
In their debut season GT defeated RR. Captain Hardik Pandya led from the front taking 3 wickets for 17 runs to win Man of the Match as GT chased down 130 comfortably.


The Recent Chapters (2023–2025)

2023: Chennai Super Kings (CSK)
In a rain-affected final GT set a target of 214 which was revised to 171 in 15 overs. CSK chased it down on the final ball to win their 5th title. Devon Conway was named Man of the Match.

2024: Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)
KKR completely dominated SRH bowling them out for 113 and chasing the target in just the 11th over. Mitchell Starc was awarded Man of the Match for his opening spell.
 
2025: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB)
 After an 18-year wait, RCB finally lifted their first trophy by defeating Punjab Kings. RCB set a target of 190 and won by 4 runs. Krunal Pandya playing for RCB was named Man of the Match for his crucial performance.
